OUR MISSION

Propel innovation and discovery in lifespan cognitive neuroscience and advance real-world applications of research through mentorship and collaboration in world-class facilities.

To fulfill this mission, the Institute for Human Neuroscience (IHN) focuses on the implementation of four core objectives:

INNOVATION | COLLABORATION   | TRAINING | APPLICATION

1)     Propel discovery through innovation in every aspect of the program, including: the pursuit of new research initiatives among local scientists through shared access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, integrative research support programs, and collective expertise and resources. The Institute for Human Neuroscience’s lively, cohesive, and successful program is nationally recognized for developmental neuroimaging and brain research and makes discoveries that impact the lives of individual people.

2)     Foster collaboration through our unique building structure which was thoughtfully designed by experienced laboratory directors to promote physical proximity of faculty, staff, and students to facilitate the cross-fertilization of ideas. Additionally, we partner with other programs, universities, industries, and disciplines to advance the field of cognitive neuroscience and promote communication that fosters discovery and implementation of conceptual breakthroughs that would be otherwise not possible.

3)     Supply first-class mentorship and training to the next generation of cognitive neuroscientists. Training and mentorship are provided to everyone at the Institute for Human Neuroscience, from interns, research assistants and graduate students to principal investigators. IHN’s formalized training opportunities include scientific seminars and workshops, research development programs, multifaceted training initiatives, mentorship committees and evaluations, and career development programs. Each of these opportunities aims to develop the talent and readiness of the next generation of faculty and graduate students to become tomorrow’s leaders in brain science.

4)     Advancement of real-world application of research findings. The Institute for Human Neuroscience aims for the ground-breaking research conducted here to have a long-term and tangible impact on the communities it serves. It starts with community engagement, where we share research questions, findings, and broader impacts on health with community members of all ages and backgrounds. We seek to disseminate all findings that lead to preventative measures, treatment and therapeutic approaches, and modifications to environmental factors on both a personal and public policy scale.
